Who is Carter Booth?

I am a Seattle-born, Denver-raised kid of a former NBA player. I quickly realized that basketball was not my path, and shortly thereafter was signed up for co-ed volleyball by my very non-volleyball-knowing parents. I didn’t begin playing competitively until I was 12 years old. For the first few years, because of my rapid growth, I had the athleticism of Bambi on roller skates. It took an immeasurable amount of effort (and emails) to start being taken seriously by scouts. Eventually, I got an offer to play D1 volleyball in the Big Ten, so I graduated high school early to begin training.

When I stepped onto campus my freshman year, it was a bit of a rude awakening. For the first time in my life, I wasn’t the best player in the gym anymore. I was surrounded by All-Americans, future pros, and athletes who had been at the top of their game for years. It forced me to take a hard look at myself, my habits, and how badly I actually wanted it.

I started my college career coming off the bench. Nothing was handed to me. Every rep, every lift, every practice became an opportunity to prove that I belonged. Over time, I earned a starting spot, competing my way past three upperclassmen who had more experience than I did. That process taught me more than any win ever could. It taught me discipline, resilience, and how to show up every single day, even when it’s hard.

During my time at Wisconsin, I was fortunate to be part of something really special. In my three years there, we made two Final Four appearances, competing at the highest level and biggest stages of college volleyball. My senior season, I had the honor of serving as a captain for a very young team, helping lead us back to the Final Four. That experience solidified my passion not just for playing, but for leading.

I left Wisconsin as a 2 time All-American, an achievement that reflects not just performance, but the work, consistency, and mindset it takes to compete at the top. What I carry with me most, though, is the journey. I know what it feels like to be overlooked, to sit on the bench, to question yourself, and to fight your way into a role you’ve earned. I also know what it feels like to compete on the biggest stages in college volleyball. That perspective is at the heart of my coaching.

Now, because of that perspective, I’m a professional volleyball player in Italy. I’m literally living out my dream.

Whether you’re just starting out, trying to earn a starting spot, or navigating the recruiting process, I understand how overwhelming it can feel. I’ve been on both sides of it, including transferring and experiencing different types of programs, and I want athletes to know they don’t have to figure it all out alone.
